Just 80,000 more arrivals are needed to achieve the government’s target of two million tourists this year.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, 1.92 million tourists had visited the Maldives as of yesterday, reflecting an 8.9% increase compared to the same period last year.
Tourist arrivals declined in early December with lower numbers during the first nine days of the month than last year. However, arrivals have since increased. As of now, tourist arrivals this month are 3.3% higher than the same period last year.
To meet the target, an average of 5,000 tourists per day is required over the remaining 16 days of December to meet the 80,000 total. Currently, the daily average stands at 5,690 tourists, and with the festive season approaching, it is expected that the two million target will be achieved by the last week of this month.
By nationality, the largest number of tourists this year came from China, with 257,794 arrivals - an increase of 77,270 compared to last year.
On the other hand, the Indian market experienced the largest decline, with 72,203 fewer arrivals compared to 2023. However, efforts by the government and the Ministry of Tourism have helped boost numbers from India toward the end of the year.
