The government is working to accumulate power to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in a bid to rig and steal the 2028 presidential election, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih alleged on Tuesday night.
Speaking at a rally held by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) at the Artificial Beach area in Male', Solih slammed the government's actions intended at allowing President Muizzu to influence independent institutions.
He highlighted the bills proposed by the government to amend the laws on the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Elections Commission (EC) which will allow the President to appoint the heads of these bodies.
Solih alleged that the government was undermining the powers given to independent institutions by the Constitution in order to expand the authority of President Muizzu.
"They have proposed to remove two people. They have proposed to remove a member of the ACC. What is the purpose? To concentrate powers and rig and steal the upcoming 2028 presidential election," he said.
The opposition should not allow the government to go ahead with this plan and the opposition will not stand a chance during the next presidential election if they do not stand up against it today, Solih warned.
The Parliament on Tuesday accepted no-confidence motions against ACC Vice President Abdul Salaam and member Thoha Mohamed and EC Vice President Ali Nashaath and members Dr. Mohamed Zahir and Mohamed Asif along with a no-confidence motion against Civil Service Commission (CSC) President Mohamed Nasih.
