The government has today launched the formulation of a 20-year national development plan with the assistance of the UNDP and the Australian Government.
The masterplan will be developed within one year in consultation with all relevant stakeholders and the public along with various sectors and political parties.
As part of the process of developing the masterplan, a National Development Act Bill will be drafted and a provision will be added to the Constitution to provide legal authority to ensure the implementation of the plan.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Housing Ministry Dr. Ali Haidar said the 20-year plan will be an important road map to shape the country's development in a sustainable manner and set the country in the right direction.
“The plan will take a scientific approach to understanding the state of the people's life in different parts of the country, assessing the challenges and difficulties faced by the sectors and identifying the need for reform and improvement in the light of evidence and information," he said.
The development plan will be prepared with the assistance of foreign experts but will be led by Maldivians.
Formulating a 20-year national development plan is a pledge made by the government of President Muizzu.
