Hurawalhi Beach Resort has been fined just MVR 20,000 for putting up large rock boulders around the island without obtaining permission.

In an announcement, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said rock boulders were placed in the lagoon on the eastern side of the island.

The work was carried out without an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report, the agency stressed.

EPA said a small fine was imposed as it was the first time the resort had committed such an offence.

The fine was imposed on October 21. EPA has ordered the resort to pay the fine within 30 days.
