The President's Office has sent a letter to the Parliament complaining against the Maldives Media Council (MMC) for not taking action against news platforms that "spread false news to defame" President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The letter was sent to the Independent Institutions Committee. The committee's Galolhu Dhekunu MP Meekail Naseem told Adhadhu that the President's Office's letter said the complaints submitted to the MMC and the Maldives Broadcasting Commission were not being investigated.
"The news was monitored by the President's Office in great detail. It includes news reported by registered and unregistered platforms. They described it as attempts to defame the President," he said.
The committee has decided to summon the MMC and Broadcom next week
In August, the MMC said the President's Office had submitted 75 complaints this year.
In July, MMC said the highest number of complaints was submitted from state agencies this year.
Adhadhu submitted a Right to Information (RTI) request to get the number and details of the cases filed by the President's Office. In response to the RTI, the President's Office said that as of July 31, it had submitted 75 complaints to the MMC.
