The Agriboat developed by the Japanese government and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has been handed over to the Local Government Ministry.
Japanese Ambassador Takeuchi Midori handed over the boat to the Local Government Minister Adam Shareef Umar during a ceremony in Hulhumale' on Wednesday.
The contract to design and build the boat was awarded on June 13 last year.
The main purpose of introducing the Agriboat is to facilitate the transportation of fresh and quality agricultural products to Male' and other islands.
It will reduce the damage to products during delivery and will also ensure a steady supply of fresh produce to islands without enough agricultural products.
The cold storage installed on the boat is solar-powered. This will reduce fuel consumption, costs and carbon emissions.
