Two expensive apartments bought by former President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) Bassam Adeel Jaleel in the Amin Avenue building have been handed over to the police.
Police had earlier warned Bassam that the two apartments would be seized if they were not handed over by 12:00 am.
Apartments A1205 and A1206 in Block A of Lot No. N2-25 in Hulhumale' were handed over to police at 12:00 am, police said.
Police decided to seize the apartments after sending a case to the Prosecutor General's (PG) Office. The police believe funds provided by FIFA to FAM were used to buy the apartments.
Police are seeking charges against the owner of Amin Avenue, Amin Construction, former head of FAM's financial department, Mohamed Agil and former senior official of FAM Hassan Waheed (Dhona).
Police allege that Bassam spent USD 1 million of the USD 1.9 million Covid loan given by FIFA to the FAM to buy the apartments. He made the payments in three instalments.
Meanwhile, Bassam's passport was also seized in February after the PG office charged him with fraud and money laundering.
