The leader of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) Ahmed Siyam Mohamed has decided to contest in the 2028 Presidential Election.
Reliable sources confirmed to Adhadhu that the MDA is working to increase its membership and preparing for the presidential election. The campaign teams are also being formed.
One source told Adhadhu that Siyam decided to run for President because he believed the Maldives could overcome the current economic situation with a leader like him.
Siyam remains a supporter of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the incumbent government and his party backs the government in the Parliament. Senior MDA officials also hold political positions in the government.
There have been no rumours of a political feud between Siyam and President Muizzu. It must be highlighted that President Muizzu first got a position in the Cabinet in 2012 as a member of MDA.
However, the government recently decided not to provide a sovereign guarantee to a USD 165 million loan from a Chinese bank to develop a large resort. The decision was taken despite the Meedhoo MP and tourism magnate's official request.
Siyam decided to support President Muizzu for the second round of last year's presidential election after forming a coalition with the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to back former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the first round.
