Aishath Sajnee, one of the government's representatives on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Maldives (BML), has resigned from her post.

Adhadhu can confirm her resignation but the reason remains unclear. She is currently out of the country.

The bank was unavailable for an official comment.

Meanwhile, BML Managing Director and CEO Karl Stumke resigned on September 9 and Board Member Aishath Noordeen resigned on August 27.

Aishath resigned following a letter of dismissal from the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB). Stumke resigned after a professional decision by the bank to limit dollar transactions was labelled a "financial coup" by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Sajnee was appointed to the BML board in 2021. Every year since then, she has served on the bank's board as a government representative.

On January 25 this year, all non-executive members representing the government on the BML board of directors, including Sajnee, were sacked. However, the decision was reversed two days later and she was re-appointed to the board.

In addition to being a board member of BML, Sajnee is a policy and research consultant to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. It is unclear whether she resigned from the post. She has also previously worked for the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The government has now proposed new directors to the BML board. Principal Secretary to the President on Cabinet Affairs Ali Habeeb has been proposed for the post of Chairman.
