Male, Maldives (September 8): Ibadulla and Fasuhaa named Best Athletes at National Championship.
Ibadulla clinched gold medals in both the 100m and 200m races, with a meet record in the 200m, giving him an edge in the Best Athlete rankings. His performance ended Hassan Saaid’s five-year streak as the top athlete in the National Championship.
Hussain Fazeel Haaroon (Flash), who came in second in the rankings, won gold in the 800m, 1500m, and 5000m events. However, the Best Athlete award criteria prioritize the top two performances and meet records, which ultimately favored Ibadulla over the 2018 Best Athlete, Fazeel.
In the 100m, Ibadulla finished in 10.59 seconds, while Saaid was second with 10.67 seconds, and Mohamed Minhaal Shamin took third with 10.74 seconds. For the 200m, Ibadulla clocked 21.69 seconds, Minhaal completed it in 22.00 seconds, and Ahmed Najudhaan Abdulla finished in 22.17 seconds.
Back to back three best athlete awards to Fasuhaa
Fasuhaa has earned the Best Athlete award in three different competitions within just nine months. She first secured the title at last year’s National Grand Prix, followed by another win at this year's Association Championship, and continued her streak with a third consecutive Best Athlete accolade at the National Championship.
At the National Championship, Fasuhaa dominated the 400m, 800m, and 1500m events. She set a new national record in the 1500m with a time of 5 minutes 03.51 seconds. Shamha Ahmed finished second with 5 minutes 21.30 seconds, and Zeek Ashraf Rasheed took third with 5 minutes 26.28 seconds.
In the 800m, Fasuhaa crossed the finish line in 2 minutes 15.96 seconds, while Zeek Ashraf Rasheed finished second in 2 minutes 30.58 seconds, and Shamha Ahmed took third with a time of 2 minutes 33.27 seconds.
On the final day of the championship, Fasuhaa won the 400m race with a time of 57.22 seconds. Ziva Moosa Shafeeu came in second with 59.98 seconds, and Hawwa Muzna Faiz completed the race in third with 1 minute 01.17 seconds.
Dhivehi Sifainge Club (DSC) was named the Best Men’s Team at the National Athletics Championship for the 17th time. After losing the title to Saaid Sports last year, DSC reclaimed it this year with 264 points. Track and Field Association finished second with 128 points. DSC's previous titles were won in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and now 2024.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Track and Field Association has secured the Best Women’s Team title at the National Athletics Championship.
