Male', Maldives (August 31st): Commissioner of Sports Mohamed Tholal is requesting proper assistance from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to address the issues facing the Badminton Association of Maldives (BAM).
In an interview with "Adhadhu Sports," Tholal stated that officials from the Badminton Association of Maldives have not provided the Badminton World Federation (BWF) with accurate information. As a result, there have been significant miscommunications in the letter BWF sent to the Maldives Olympic Committee.
Fifteen days ago, Commissioner of Sports Mohamed Tholal announced on X (formerly Twitter) that a decision has been made regarding the issues surrounding the Badminton Association.
Tholal, then, said, "The National Sports Council (NSC) will be in charge of BAM until the election is held, and I will be forming a committee in consultation with the NSC to organize the election."
"We believe there has been progress in our communication with the BWF."
The Badminton Association of Maldives has approached the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for clarification regarding the decision Tholal.
In a letter to the Maldives Olympic Committee, the BWF expressed regret that the Commissioner's actions came during ongoing good faith discussions involving the elected BAM leadership, the MOC, and the BWF. These discussions had led to an agreement to form a three-member Ad Hoc Committee to oversee BAM elections by the end of the year.
In a recent interview, Tholal expressed his willingness to accept the BWF's decision but suggested that a five-member Ad Hoc Committee would be more effective. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that if the BWF has decided on a three-member committee, he has no objections to that.
"We seek a resolution to this issue. Most of the problems have arisen because BAM has not cooperated with the Commissioner, provided inaccurate information to various stakeholders, and failed to communicate effectively over the past nine months," Tholal said.
He also noted that although the term of the last elected BAM executive committee officially ended on March 11th, they neither communicated their intention to extend their term nor acted on the Commission’s suggestions to amend the statutes and conduct the elections.
The Badminton Association's lawyer has filed a case in Civil Court to challenge the Commissioner of Sports' decision to transfer the association's administration to the NSC.
Tholal clarified that this court case is another instance of miscommunication caused by the Badminton Association.
A resolution is urgently needed regarding the issues with the Badminton Association, as the current leadership is damaging the sport's reputation and causing ongoing uncertainty within the badminton community.
There are cases filed with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) concerning the association's leadership, including allegations of misuse of athletes scholarship funds and corruption.
The Badminton Association's president, Moosa Nashid, resigned from his position last month, despite his third term officially concluding in March of this year.
