Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla warned ruling party lawmakers to be vigilant about those trying to confuse them because of internal strife within the party, some MPs have said.
Speaking at a rally at the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) campaign hall in Male', Abdul Raheem said the 75 PNC MPs must work to assist President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and pave the way to achieve development and progress.
“It should be your responsibility to move forward in the path that will benefit the country and the people. You can go forward in that path by remaining steadfast with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu," he stated.
Abdul Raheem's remarks come amid growing differences of opinion within the PNC's large parliamentary group. Recently, the party's parliamentary group deputy leader Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq resigned.
"If the anti-defection law is repealed now, it will show [the extent of the division]. There are about 30 MPs who are unhappy with the leadership now. Their statements show that," a PNC MP told Adhadhu.
Some PNC MPs who spoke with Adhadhu said they were unhappy about many issues. They added that their concerns have been shared with the leadership.
These include attempts to dissolve the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to strengthen PNC, corruption within the government and companies, delays in fulfilling MPs' demands and the slow pace of government operations.
