More than MVR 50 million was spent on a tree programme carried out when President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was the mayor of Male’, Mayor Adam Azim has said.

Speaking on Adhadhu’s Etherefuh programme, Azim said he was informed that between MVR 50 million to MVR 60 million had been spent on the tree programme, calling it a waste.

Despite such a large expenditure, the city council did not properly maintain stocks of trees and materials, Azim said.

“Inventory was not maintained there. That’s a very big problem,” Azim said.

An inventory of the tree programme and the tree shop has been ordered, which would reveal the full truth, Azim said.

City council employees also travelled to other islands in the name of finding trees for the programme launched in 2022, a city council member with knowledge of the matter told Adhadhu.

At the opening ceremony of the “Male’ Fehi” shop developed under the tree programme in October 2022, Muizzu said that it will be conducted in a sustainable and holistic manner. The purpose of the programme was to make Male’ pleasant and green, he said.

In addition to Male’ city, all Maldivian citizens will accept the programme, Muizzu had said.

Date palms were also planted in the south and east of Male’ under the programme.
