The Criminal Court has imposed a hefty fine on an official who confessed to accepting a bribe as the head of procurement and logistics at the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA).
Hailam Mohamed, from the Henveiru Samahil house in Male’, was charged with bribery and three counts of abuse of authority.
According to the charges raised by the state, quotations had been sought from four companies tied to the accused for procurements by the DJA. He knew that the same people were behind all four businesses but awarded procurement of air-conditioners needed by the DJA along with all repair services to one of the four companies.
A deposit of MVR 5,000 was then made to the accused from an account under the name of one of the companies, the charges stated.
Hailam pleaded guilty to the charges.
In the verdict delivered last Thursday, the Criminal Court imposed a fine of MVR 56,200 and 40 hours of community service as punishment for the bribery charge.
Community service of 120 hours along with a fine of MVR 82,200 was handed down as the punishment for the three counts of abuse of official position.
The judge also ordered compensation for losses incurred by the state. A sum of MVR 241,244 was determined as compensation.
The Criminal Court’s verdicts ordered Hailam to pay a total of MVR 379,644 over the next six months.
