Land reclamation in the Giraavaru lagoon where plots of land were awarded to Male’ natives under the Binveriya scheme is nearly complete, the latest satellite images of the area has shown.

After the completion of the first two phases of the Giraavaru project, work is ongoing for the reclamation of 90 hectares under the third phase

Since the government has not shared much information about the project, Adhadhu examined the latest satellite photos of the Giraavaru lagoon. The project is estimated to be 80 percent done when the photos are compared with the area of the Giraavaru lagoon designated for reclamation in the environment impact assessment (EIA) report for the project.

The land reclamation permit granted by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) expires on August 12. Therefore, the reclamation of Giraavaru lagoon must be completed in the next 21 days. If not, the permit period could be extended upon request with the EPA.

A large number of plots were awarded from Giraavaru under the Binveriya scheme. But the current government allowed recipients to change their plots from Giraavaru to Gulhifalhu. Some 2,210 people submitted applications to change their plots to Gulhifalhu.
