Candidates from the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) won by-elections held on Saturday for vacant seats on the Male' and Kulhudhuffushi city councils.

PNC won all three seats on the Male' city council and one seat on the Kulhudhuffushi city council.

Candidates elected in the by-elections for the vacant seats:

  • Fathimath Ishan Ali: Machchangoalhi Medhu constituency
  • Fathimath Shaufa: Henveiru Hulhagu constituency
  • Ali Aiman: Hulhumale' constituency
  • Ibrahim Ahmed: Kulhudhuffushi city Uthuru constituency

According to provisional result sheets published by the Elections Commission, the PNC candidates won the seats with a large margin of victory.

Voting took place from 8 am to 4 pm. The turnout was low with only five percent of voters casting ballots by 10 am.

The city council seats were vacated when some members resigned after winning April's parliamentary elections.

The PNC has full control of the Male' city council with only the mayor and one council member from opposition parties.
