Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah, parliamentary group leader of the People’s National Congress (PNC) supermajority, has advised the Speaker to include a provision in the new rules of procedure to restrict the summoning of ministers.
Sports Minister Abdullah Rafiu attended the Parliament today to answer two questions submitted by Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). During follow-up questions after the minister answered Mauroof’s questions, Falah said he had a suggestion for the Speaker in addition to a question for the minister.
“What’s next is for me to make a suggestion to the Speaker. Whether it’s best to summon a minister to the Majlis only if an answer is not given within three days after an MP sends a question related to the field - I think this might be a good thing to consider when the rules of this Majlis are amended,” Falah said.
Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla did not respond to Falah. Instead he allowed the minister to respond to Falah’s question.
Falah said his question was the one that Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau had been unable to complete.
Shujau had been unable to complete the question as his time was taken up with responding to remarks from opposition MDP MPs.
