The government has decided to increase its annual contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to USD 50,000 (MVR 771,000).
Maldives previously contributed USD 5000 every year to UNRWA. Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed announced the increase of the contribution at the UNRWA pledging conference.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said the Maldives also pledged a contribution of more than USD 1.29 million to Palestine through the United Nations Relief Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East.
"Ambassador Mohamed noted that under the guidance of President Dr. [Mohamed] Muizzu, a telethon was organized to demonstrate solidarity with the Palestinians, through which support from the general public amounting to 18.4 million Maldivian Rufiyaa, and 49,800 US Dollars was raised, to be donated to the Palestinian people through UNRWA," the statement read.
With the proceeds from the telethon and USD 50,000 from the government, the total donation will reach USD 1.29 million. The Zakat Fund also plans to donate USD 100,000 to Palestine.
