"Maldives will uphold Islam when ensuring rights under ICCPR"

Attorney General Ahmed Usham has said that the Maldives will uphold Islamic standards when ensuring the rights under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

He made the remarks at a review session held in Geneva, Switzerland, to present a report on the efforts made to ensure civil and political rights and freedoms in Maldives in accordance with the Convention from July 2012 to March 2022.

Speaking as the head of the Maldives' delegation at the session, Usham said Islam is one of the main foundations of Maldivian citizenship. He said that it is a basis that cannot be changed in Maldivian society.

He stressed that the rights described in the ICCPR can only be provided in Maldives in accordance with the Constitution, laws and principles of Islam.

The review, which was divided into two sessions, was attended by representatives from the President's Office, the Attorney General's Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Gender, the Department of Judicial Administration and the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the UN.
