The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has laid off a large number of workers.
The company has not revealed the number of sacked workers amid cost-cutting measures by the government.
However, some employees of MIFCO who spoke to Adhadhu said that more than 30 people have been dismissed so far from Kooddoo.
MIFCO media official Ibrahim Saeed (Cade) said that jobs have been cut only from Kooddoo so far. But the workforce from the company's other operations will also be downsized in the coming days, he said.
The company has been laying off staff with poor attendance records or prolonged abstenteeism, Ibrahim Saeed said.
"The dismissals were made within the rules and regulations," he said.
Last month, the Finance Ministry presented a paper to the cabinet to start implementing austerity measures due to financial constraints. However, the implementation has not been announced after the paper was approved.
The extremely high number of political appointments has not been reduced despite the layoffs from government companies.
