A suspect was arrested yesterday in connection with the theft of cables connected to a State Electricity Company (STELCO) transformer that provides electricity to the Majeedhiyya School area.
A 32-year-old Maldivian man was arrested over the theft, which occurred last Tuesday, police said, adding that the investigation was ongoing.
The Criminal Court remanded the suspect to 15 days in custody, police said in a message sent to the media.
STELCO said on Tuesday that the theft of the cables caused a power cut in Majeedhiyya School and from some homes in Henveiru Abadhahfehi Magu, Medhuziyaaraiy Magu, Kalhuhuraa Magu and Karankaa Magu.
In addition to the loss to STELCO, the theft of cables deprives the public of electricity services, STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy said.
"In order to protect against the damage being caused by this, I strongly urge the relevant authorities to find and take all necessary legal actions against those who commit such acts and those who buy stolen items in a manner that encourages those who do this," Fahmy said at the time.
