Police have arrested 50 undocumented workers and handed them over to the Immigration Department during an operation conducted Saturday.
The operation began on Saturday afternoon and 50 people had been arrested by Saturday night. Police did not say whether actions would be taken against them.
Police said the operation was conducted in the local market, other markets in Male' and some other areas.
The operation was launched after Home Minister Ali Ihusan said on Thursday that the problem of undocumented workers could pose a threat to national security.
The Home Ministry conducted a major operation across the country last May to track down undocumented workers.
Several undocumented workers have been handed over to Immigration under the operation "Kurangi."
Although the government claims the problem of undocumented workers could pose a threat to national security, an announcement was made last week that efforts were underway to lift the ban on hiring more than 100,000 workers from a single country.
