The Public Service Media (PSM) canceled plans for a live broadcast of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony yesterday after criticism of the decision.
When Adhadhu asked about the reasons for canceling the live coverage, PSM Deputy Managing Director Yameen Rasheed denied making any plans for a live broadcast of Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.
“We never decided to bring it live. That is absolutely false news,” Yameen said.
Despite his denial, Adhadhu has obtained a shooting schedule of PSM programmes. The schedule included live coverage of Modi’s ceremony from 6 pm to 8 pm on Sunday. Presenters and technicians as well as sound and lighting staff had been arranged for the scheduled coverage.
Moreover, three PSM employees confirmed the decision for a live broadcast of Modi’s swearing-in ceremony to Adhadhu.
However, employees were later informed of the cancelation of the coverage.
PSM employees travelled to India with equipment needed for live coverage, Adhadhu understands. PSM reported live from India during the 10 am news bulletin yesterday.
Maldivian media never provided live coverage of an Indian Prime Minister’s swearing-in ceremony before. The state media canceled live coverage of yesterday’s ceremony after facing extreme public anger and disapproval.
Adhadhu’s reporting of PSM’s plans for live coverage of Modi’s ceremony prompted an outpouring of anger from the public towards PSM on social media.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu departed for India on Saturday night to attend the ceremony.
It was his first visit to India in his official capacity since assuming office.
President Muizzu was among the first leaders to congratulate Modi after he secured a third term. In a post on X, the President gave assurances of working together for the development and stability of both countries.
Former President Abdulla Yameen attended the ceremony when Modi was first sworn in as Prime Minister and Modi visited the Maldives for the swearing-in ceremony of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
