Deaths Commission dissolved with unfinished cases

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday dissolved the commission formed to investigate deaths and enforced disappearances before most cases could be concluded.

The Deaths Commission formed by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih launched investigations into 27 cases. However, investigations were only completed and findings shared with the President's Office in fewer than 10 cases.

However, the presidential decree issued by President Muizzu to dissolve the commission stated that it was done "following the completion of its mandate."

Some of the cases concluded by the Deaths Commission include the abduction and murder of journalist Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla, the death of Raudha Athif in Bangladesh, the murder of former MP Afrashim Ali, the custodial death of Hassan Zareer and the murder of Fathir Mohamed in gang violence.

Investigating unresolved murders and enforced disappearances was a pledge of former President Solih. The commission was formed on November 18, 2018, a day after he assumed office.
