Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer met with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani on Sunday.
Zameer was accompanied on the visit to Qatar by a high-level delegation from the Foreign Ministry, including Bilateral Secretary Dr. Hala Hameed, Ambassador-at-Large Dr. Fazeel Najeeb and Assistant Director Lamha Saleem.
It was the first high-level visit to Qatar since the restoration of diplomatic ties in 2021 after relations were severed during former President Abdulla Yameen's government.
During Sunday's meeting, Zameer thanked Qatar for the assistance provided to the Maldives. Zameer also expressed appreciation for Qatar’s role in the mediation process on the Gaza crisis.
Deepening bilateral relations between the two countries was discussed at the meeting, the Foreign Ministry said. The ministers also reaffirmed commitment to further strengthening a partnership in multilateral fora on matters of global concern, it added.
The Maldives cut diplomatic ties with Qatar in 2017 amid pressure exerted on the country after the Saudi Arabian government cut diplomatic ties with Qatar.
The Maldives restored ties with Qatar in March 2021 during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government after the dispute between Saudi Arabia and Qatar was resolved and diplomatic relations between the countries were re-established.
