The government has decided to build an international airport in the Maldives Economic Gateway, which is being developed as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Ihavandhippolhu.
The Economic Ministry today signed an MoU with Dubai's International Free Zone Authority (IFZA) to develop and operate areas designated as special economic zones (SEZs) by the current government.
During the signing ceremony, a plan for the project was unveiled.
Ihavandhippolhu atoll, where the Maldives Economic Gateway will be located, is naturally located in most north of the country. The atoll includes the islands of Thuraakunu, Uligan, Hoarafushi, Ihavandhoo and Molhadhoo.
Currently, there is a domestic airport in Hoarafushi.
According to the 3D animation shown during the ceremony, the new international airport will be located north of Hoarafushi. Under the project, reclamation will be carried out in the lagoons of Hoarafushi and Dhigufaruhuraa and a bridge will be built to connect the two islands.
In addition to the airport, many development projects are to be implemented in the area.
The projects include an Islamic financial hub, a film city, a sports hub, a special area for universities and research, a cruise terminal and an international trade port as well as residential areas.
State Trading Organization (STO) signed a term sheet agreement with Vitol on March 13 to establish an international bunkering hub at the port.
