Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer has said that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will soon visit India on an official visit.

In an interview with Asian News International (ANI) during his ongoing visit to India, Zameer said the President's first two official visits to Turkey and China were taken as it was in the best interest of the country.

“We (the Maldives government) did discuss with Delhi about a visit. But for the convenience of both sides, we thought it might be okay for us to delay it a little bit. So, in fact, even today, with my discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, we are discussing the President’s visit to Delhi very soon. Hopefully,” he was quoted as saying.

The first official visits of all former Presidents since the new Constitution came into force in 2008 were made to India.

However, President Muizzu acted in contravention of the tradition and made his first official visit to Turkey followed by China.

After the visit to China, President Muizzu criticized India while three deputy ministers also insulted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media.

This comes as relations between Maldives and India have deteriorated since President Muizzu came to power while closer ties are being formed with China including a military agreement.
