Maldives fish exports have fallen to a record low.
According to statistics from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), fish exports fell 48 percent in the last three months.
Frozen tuna exports fell by 50.8 percent, canned fish exports fell by 25.7 percent and processed fish exports declined by 40.5 percent.
Fish exports in the first three months of the year stood at 14,389.5 metric tonnes. These include 12,041 metric tonnes of frozen tuna and 158.6 metric tonnes of frozen raw fish.
Exports in the last three months included 285.3 metric tonnes of processed fish and 1,904.3 metric tonnes of canned fish.
Figures from Customs show that fish exports fell 31 percent in January and 18 percent in February and 64 percent in March this year.
Fish exports increased by 10 percent in the first three months of last year compared to the previous three months. During that period, frozen tuna exports rose 11 percent, while canned fish exports rose 4.7 percent.
