Local Government Minister Adam Shareef said on Thursday that the Chinese government will provide the necessary resources for the construction of 50 council buildings.
Speaking at the "Fanoalla Dharubaaru 2024" in Haa Dhaal Hanimaadhoo, Adam Shareef said that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Chinese government would provide the necessary resources for the 50 councils to be built in the atolls.
The minister expressed hopes that the construction of the 50 council buildings will begin this year and added that such opportunities will be found for other councils in the future.
“According to the latest detailed information given to me by the President, the Chinese government has offered to provide all the necessary facilities to build the 50 councils,” Adam Shareef said.
The government has said that the 50 councils will be selected under a guideline formed following a public consultation process. The councils have not yet been chosen.
Adam Shareef said he felt the plight of the councils and would work to improve the situation.
President Muizzu announced on February 26 that the government would establish council buildings in 50 islands this year.
The President said that although the works have not been budgeted, they will be started under the investor financial model. The aim is to provide a good quality office building for all island councils, he said.
