President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has given important instructions to the MPs-elect representing the government during a meeting at his official residence Muleeaage on Tuesday night.

The government has secured a supermajority in the 20th People's Majlis. According to the preliminary results, 66 candidates from the ruling People's National Congress have confirmed seats. Six candidates, who contested independently but with the President's support, have now joined the ruling party.

Meanwhile, Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim, Maldives National Party (MNP) President Mohamed Nazim, Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) leader Ahmed Siyam Mohamed and MDA candidate Ahmed Abbas who won the Velidhoo seat also support the government. This brings the number of MPs representing the government to 76.

Adhadhu understands that all MPs-elect who were in Male' attended Tuesday night's meeting in Muleeaage. Cabinet members and other senior officials of the government also attended the meeting.

An MP-elect who attended the meeting told Adhadhu that President Muizzu emphasized maintaining the unity of the PNC parliamentary group. The President instructed MPs-elect to communicate directly with him, he added.

Muizzu stressed that there will be no government officials to give directives to MPs on his behalf.

“The President said that all MPs can discuss with him directly. They can contact him and send messages. There will be no people who will go to the members saying that the President said so,” the MP-elect said.

According to some sources, one of the main reasons why the past governments could not retain their parliamentary majority was the lack of communication between the President and MPs representing the government.

However, President Muizzu is trying to work closely with all 76 MPs, the MP-elect said.
