A nominee for the post of Parliament speaker will be decided after discussions within the party, Chairperson of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) Abdul Raheem Abdulla has said.

Provisional results of Sunday's parliamentary election show that the PNC has won 68 out of 93 seats. The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) won two seats and the Maldives National Party (MNP) won one seat. Both parties are allied with the government.

Most of the 11 independent candidates who have won seats also support the government.

Speaking to Adhadhu after PNC's historic victory, Abdul Raheem said discussions will be held with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the party leadership before making a decision.

Abdul Raheem was expected to become the Parliament Speaker following PNC's victory in last year's presidential election. Some reports suggest that he is interested in the position.

When questioned about the matter, Abdul Raheem, who serves as a special advisor to the President and is the MP-elect for Fonadhoo, said the decision would be based on the advice of President Muizzu.

"My interest is towards any decision that the President wants," he said.

Other potential candidates for the Speaker post include MP-elect for Dhiggaru Ahmed Nazim and MP-elect for Nilandhoo, President Muizzu's sibling Fathimath Saudha.
