A major event with fireworks will take place tonight to celebrate the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) historic victory in yesterday's parliamentary elections, the party has said.
The Progressive Party of Maldives-People's National Congress (PPM-PNC) coalition said the rally will begin at 8:30 pm at the artificial beach in Male'. A fireworks display was planned for the end of the rally, PNC spokesperson Heena Waleed said.
"We invite all beloved Maldivian citizens to this event. There will be fireworks after the event," Heena said in a text message sent to the media.
Provisional results so far show that the PNC has won 68 out of 93 seats. The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) won two seats and the Maldives National Party (MNP) won one seat. Both parties are allied with the government.
Most of the 11 independent candidates who have won seats also support the government.
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has won 10 seats, according to current provisional results. The party failed to win a majority from previous strongholds such as Addu city and Kulhudhuffushi city.
