The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) is expected to win a large majority in the parliamentary elections, according to provisional results.
According to the results confirmed so far, PNC will win more than 55 seats in parliament. The majority in the 20th People's Majlis is 47 seats.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu came to power with 54 percent of the vote in September last year. The ruling party is expected to win a much higher percentage in the parliament election.
This is also likely to be the worst parliament election for the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Official statistics show that the voter turnout was 73 percent when polling closed. A total of 284,663 people were eligible to vote in the election.
A total of 602 ballot boxes have been set up for the election with 241 in the Male' area and 34 in resorts.
