Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has suspended opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Maafannu Dhekunu candidate Hassan Iad (Iadey).

Iad, an employee of HDC, was suspended for 14 days under Clause 6.1 of the company's Progressive Disciplinary Action Policy.

The suspension was imposed on the grounds that he was under investigation in connection to a complaint.

Iad told Adhadhu that he had no knowledge of the purported complaint against him.

“When I went out to office today after the [Eid] holiday, HR summoned me and gave me a letter. They did not give any further information. I don't know what case they are investigating,” Iad said.

Iad said he had not done anything in the past that would have required him to be suspended pending investigation into a case.

"I have not done anything against the spirit of work. My attendance will be good. I have not stolen anything. I have not asked anyone to do anything that goes against rules," he said.

“I believe this is a political move, this is political,” Iad added.

In the letter issued by HDC, Iad was forbidden, during the suspension period, from entering the company's buildings and sites except to areas where the public is allowed to enter.

The letter also asked him to to hand over any property given to him by HDC before working hours ended on Sunday.

The letter added that necessary action will be taken after a 14-day investigation and asked him to cooperate fully with the investigation.

Meanwhile, MDP and other political parties have accused the government of misusing state resources and threatening workers ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for later this month.

Transparency Maldives has also expressed concern over the use of state resources for campaign purposes.
