The inaugural congress of the People's National Front (PNF), a new party under the leadership of former President Abdulla Yameen, scheduled for Monday night has been postponed.

The congress was previously due to take place at the Ghiyasuddin school and arrangements were made for Yameen to attend.

"Due to lack of cooperation from various government agencies, a new date for holding the PNF rally due to be held tomorrow will be announced very soon. PNF can't be stopped," former Minister Maleeh Jamal, a founding member, said yesterday about the reasons for the delay.

Yameen, who is serving an 11-year jail sentence on corruption and bribery charges related to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal, is currently under house arrest. However, he has privileges to leave the house.

A Corrections official told Adhadhu that Yameen has not been authorized to attend the inaugural congress. The prison authority's rules do not permit it, the official cited as the reason.

PNF said previously that it would disregard Correction's response and that Yameen would join the event for formally setting up the party. Therefore, Yameen is expected to be present at the rescheduled congress.
