The Elections Commission (EC) today granted permission for People's National Front (PNF), led by former President Abdulla Yameen, to hold its inaugural congress.

Former Science Minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamaal who leads efforts for the party's formation said EC gave permission today.

“God willing, President Yameen's work for the sake of the country and the people will continue rapidly,” Maleeh wrote in a post on X.

The EC authorized Yameen's eldest son Zain Abdulla Yaheem to form a political party under the name of PNF on November 29, 2023.

Before the formation of the PNF, Yameen was the leader of the current ruling coalition of Progressive Party of Maldives-People's National Congress (PPM-PNF).

He left the coalition after relations with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu deteriorated following last year's presidential election.

The PNF has not yet registered as a political party but continues to hold political gatherings.
