Transparency Maldives has called on the government to stop misusing state resources to campaign for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
In a statement issued today, Transparency Maldives said the vote is being influences through promises and pledges.
Transparency Maldives noted that major projects are being launched, especially during atolls tours, since campaigning officially began on March 21.
The number of political posts have increased to extreme levels while state-owned enterprises are being used for political purposes, the NGO said.
The statement also expressed concern over bringing major changes to ongoing development projects during the campaign season.
Transparency Maldives called on the government to stop these actions immediately and to take the initiative to examine its own compliance with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)'s standard on misuse of state resources.
The NGO further called on the ACC, the Attorney General's Office and Parliament to work together to formulate a legal framework to prevent abuse of state resources.
