The government has faced criticism for not naming Israel in a statement condemning a missile attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
A senior Iranian army general and his deputy were killed in the attack on the consulate on Monday. Reports say a total of 11 people were killed.
The Maldives government issued a statement condemning the attack but did not say that it was carried out by Israel.
"The targeting of diplomatic facilities is a violation of international law and undermines the rules of diplomatic immunity and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Upholding the inviolability of diplomatic premises according to international conventions is of utmost importance," the press release from the Foreign Ministry read.
The Iranian government said the consulate attack was carried out by Israel and that it would retaliate strongly.
Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack. However, many international news sources reported that the attack was carried out by Israel.
The Maldives government faced criticism on social media for not naming Israel in the statement condemning the attack.
"Recent attack by who? All international news media are also reporting that it is an attack by Israel," former Ambassador to UK Dr. Farahnaz Faisal wrote on X.
The latest Israeli aggression which began on October 7 has martyred 32,000 people, including more than 17,000 children.
Israeli airstrikes have targeted hospitals, mosques and refugee camps while blocking humanitarian assistance and causing a famine in the north of Gaza.
