The government has decided to provide food aid to Gaza from the Zakat Fund.
The Zakat Fund is a fund established at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs to help the poor and orphans. An agency called Zakat House was recently established to strengthen the management of the fund.
In a post on X, Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said efforts were underway to provide food aid to Gaza from the Zakat Fund. This was being done under the instruction of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, he said.
“Under the instruction of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, we are working to provide food aid to the brothers and sisters in Gaza through the Maldives Zakat Fund," Shaheem said.
The Maldives has always defended the rights of the Palestinian people in the face of Israeli aggression over the past 75 years.
The latest Israeli aggression which began on October 7 has martyred 32,000 people, including more than 17,000 children.
Israeli airstrikes have targeted hospitals, mosques and refugee camps while blocking humanitarian assistance and causing a famine in the north of Gaza.
