An inmate who was serving a sentence at the Hulhumale' prison passed away last night.
Ahmed Ijaz, 44, from Raa Madduvari, died while undergoing treatment at the Hulhumale' hospital, the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) said.
A tuberculosis patient, Ijaz was sentenced on March 7. He was taken to the Hulhumale' hospital on March 8 with difficulty breathing and admitted to the ER.
"Ahmed Ijaz's tuberculosis was discovered during treatment after he was taken to the hospital on March 8," Corrections media officer Aminath Yusreen Ahmed said.
After Ijaz's condition worsened, he was placed on a ventilator at the intensive care unit and passed away around 11:30 pm on Sunday, Corrections said.
He had been jailed for three years on drug abuse charges.
Ijaz's death was immediately reported to his family, the Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission and National Integrity Commission, Corrections said.
