This is the beginning of a series of baseless allegations, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said today, after he received a summons to attend the police station in connection with the Road Development Corporation (RDC) corruption.
In a post on X, the former Economic Minister revealed that he was asked to appear at the police station tomorrow afternoon. He added that the alleged RDC corruption is a fabricated case.
"I can confidently say that I have not done anything to be accused of a crime. I will cooperate fully with this investigation, even though it is conducted for political reasons," Fayyaz wrote.
With the parliamentary elections scheduled for April 21, Fayyaz has called on the government to stop using state resources to campaign. He alleged that the investigation is being conducted for political reasons due to government influence on the police.
Speaking to Adhadhu, Fayyaz said he would appear tomorrow and cooperate fully with the police investigation.
"Even I don't know how that case is directly related to me," he said.
Police have, so far, revealed that MVR 14 million was deposited in the accounts of three RDC employees. The investigation into the alleged corruption was launched one and a half years ago.
Money transfers from the RDC account to the personal accounts of employees were known to have occurred but the nature of the transactions remains unclear, police said on the day when an agreement was reached with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to jointly investigate the case.
At a press conference held later, police revealed that the RDC office and several other places related to the case had been searched and some people had been questioned. However, no further details were given as the case is under investigation.
