The government has decided to waive fines on water and electricity bills for households charged at the domestic rate.
In a post on social media X on Sunday, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said he has decided to completely write off fines accrued for non-payment of water and electricity bills. The relevant companies have been informed, he said.
Utility companies have also been instructed to seek agreements for convenient payment of outstanding bills, he said.
The decision was made to offer further relief to the public as part of the government's efforts to improve the state of the public's finances, he said.
The President previously revealed that the government has decided to "cap" water and electricity bills in Ramadan this year.
During a visit to Baa atoll, the President said he has asked service providers to ensure that bills do not exceed the amounts charged during normal months.
"Water and electricity bills in Ramadan will be capped at the rate of a normal month, meaning it won't go higher than that," the President said.
The President gave assurances of cooperation from Fenaka, the State Electricity Company (STELCO) and the Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) with the government's request.
