The city council has urged the public to send photos and videos of people who leave out trash on the streets of Male’.
Photos and videos of offenders can be sent through Viber and WhatsApp, Aminath Shathfa, media coordinator of the Male’ city council, said in a message sent to the media.
The city council’s designated number for the reporting is 9341144. Offenses could also be reported through the complaints portal on the council’s website, the council said.
Garbage piled up on the streets of Male’ most commonly includes large furniture, household appliances and electronic items, all of which require an extra fee to be paid to the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) for disposal.
In a post on X on Saturday, the city council listed 10 places as hotspots where household waste is usually left in Male’:

- Hadheebee Magu
- Odion Goalhi
- Maaveyo Magu rear corner
- Henveiru cemetery corner
- Barujora Goalhi corner
- Pizza Buona corner
- Dhilbahaaru Magu-Dhagadukedi Goalhi corner
- Narrow alley in front of Jamaluddin School
The city council’s appeal for public assistance came as part of its efforts in response to garbage piling up on the streets ahead of Ramadan.
Earlier this month, Male’ Mayor Adam Azim called for a reduction in the the waste disposal fees in order to solve the problem of dumping garbage in public spaces in Male’.
Speaking on Adhadhu's "Ehcheh Kalheh" program, Azim said the problem would be solved if everyone took responsibility. It could not be solved without ensuring that garbage collection fees are not a burden to the public, he said.
The city council uses 51 vehicles for garbage collection in Male’.
