The price of boneless chicken has risen due to a shortage of supply in some shops in Male'.
Happy Market, a wholesale supplier, is out of stock while major retail outlets like Redwave and Villa Mart are also out of stock.
A retailer told Adhadhu that the shortage was caused due to a delay in shipment. It is unclear when a new shipment will arrive.
A kilo of boneless chicken was previously available for MVR 80 and MVR 100. The price has now risen to MVR 150 and MVR 200 per kilo while two kilos are available for MVR 250 and MVR 350.
"Shipping has changed a lot too. Earlier, shipments came from Dubai to Colombo. Now, the route of shipments has changed from Dubai to Bombay to Colombo. It is also very difficult to bring goods from Colombo to Male'," a businessman said.
Chicken products usually come through the Red Sea and the current circumstances in the area are also fueling the delay in shipment, the businessman added.
It is expected that the shortage of boneless chicken will be completely resolved in about two or three months.
Most of the chicken is imported to Maldives from Brazil which is the largest chicken supplier in the world.
