MDP to amend laws to stop sacking of govt employees

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has said that the party plans to amend the law because employees of government companies are being sacked for political reasons.

Speaking at a campaign event on Friday night, Fayyaz said the culture of dismissing employees due to political reasons has returned with the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

He said that people across the country are complaining over the issue and that the fear of losing jobs has returned because of the policies of the current government.

"I would like to tell all employees of state companies, please continue to exercise your constitutional rights without any fear. You can conduct political activities as you wish," Fayyaz said.

He said the law would be amended to reinstate employees who lose their jobs due to political reasons and laws would be made in a way to prevent the government from laying off employees without valid reasons.

Fayyaz said the MDP has a majority in parliament and the amended law will be passed in a way that is most beneficial to the people.

He reiterated that MDP must win parliament majority in the upcoming elections to put the government on the right track.

The MDP has previously expressed concern over the dismissal of several employees in government companies.
