The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Air Corps was inaugurated on Friday night as part of the government's efforts to strengthen the capacity to monitor Maldivian territories.
The MNDF Air Corps was inaugurated at a ceremony held in Noonu Maafaru by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The MNDF Air Corps was launched with the introduction of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones to the Maldivian army. Adhadhu understands that three drones have been put to use by the MNDF.
When Adhadhu first reported that an agreement had been signed to purchase drones from Turkey, the Defence Ministry said modern platforms are being acquired to strengthen defense capabilities.
However, the government never disclosed the purchase of the drones. Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry declined to provide details when Adhadhu requested information under the Right to Information Act.
Adhadhu understands that an MVR 570 million agreement was signed to purchase the drones.
