A video showing the flight of drones purchased by the Defense Ministry under an agreement with Türkiye emerged on social media yesterday.

The video posted by Aviators Maldives shows a drone of the Baykar TB2 brand in flight. According to Aviators, which covers news from the local aviation industry, the drone was operated at Noonu Maafaru.

Adhadhu has learned that the Turkish drones purchased under an MVR 560 million agreement arrived in the Maldives last week. It was temporarily stationed at Maafaru but would later be taken to Haa Dhaal Hanimaadhoo.

The Maafaru airport hanger was temporarily handed over as a garage to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) to operate the drones. Adhadhu understands that the hanger was leased until August.

The Baykar TB2 drones are used for surveillance missions. But the drones have the capacity to be equipped with weapons and carry out armed missions.

The government has not disclosed any information related to the drones aside from assuring efforts to protect Maldivian territorial waters.
