The Elections Commission (EC) wants the government to declare April 21 and 22 as public holidays, EC Vice President Ismail Habeeb has said.
Habeeb told Adhadhu regarding the parliamentary elections rescheduled for April 21 that the commission wants government offices to be closed on polling day and the day after.
The EC decided to conduct the polls on Sunday, April 21 because the new People's Majlis could not be elected in time with any further delays, the commission said.
The EC normally holds major elections on holidays. However, there was no choice but to hold the Majlis elections on a Sunday, the commission said.
According to a new law, elections can only take place 10 days after the end of Ramadan.
The government has so far not decided to declare the election day and the day after as public holidays.
