Agreements have not been signed with other countries to import staple foodstuff to the Maldives, the State Trading Organization (STO) has said.

STO Corporate Branding Officer Yoosuf Shah said the company has not signed an agreement with another country and that it continues to import staples under a trade agreement with India.

"A trade agreement to bring staples for STO was made with India. There is no such agreement with any other country," Shah noted.

Following his state visit to China, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said on January 13 that an agreement has been signed for staple food imports from Türkiye instead of depending on one country.

"Agreement has been made with Türkiye for the supply of rice, sugar, flour and other items enough for one year and an additional 10 percent. The agreement has now been signed to bring staples from Türkiye enough for a year and an additional 10 percent," the President said.

The first flour shipment from Türkiye will arrive in February, he said at the time. In addition to flour, agreements have also been signed with various countries to import rice and sugar as well as onions, eggs and potatoes, the President said.
