A project to build a sewage treatment plant at the Velana International Airport (VIA) has been awarded to a joint venture that includes India’s Mohan Mutha company.

The joint venture of SMC Infrastructure and Mohan Mutha was contracted for MVR 77 million.

The project will be carried out to strengthen the sewerage system of VIA’s new passenger terminal and the airport as a whole, Shamaan Shakir, communications director of the airport operator Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL), told Adhadhu.

The Mohan Mutha joint venture company scored the highest points among bidders in the technical evaluation for the project, he said.

Mohan Mutha Exports is one of India’s most advanced export companies. In addition to exporting construction sand to the Maldives, the company is also carrying out several PSIP (public sector investment program) projects in the country. The company also announced last year that it was preparing to invest USD 30 million to develop a resort in the Maldives.

On several occasions in the past, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) imposed fines on MM Exports to seek compensation for damages caused by the company’s tug boats and barges running aground on reefs across the country.

MACL has been carrying out several projects under a massive project to develop VIA. While a new runway, seaplane terminal and cargo terminal have been completed and operationalized, work is ongoing on a new fuel farm and passenger terminal.
